Stellan Skarsgård began his professional acting career in Sweden in the 1960s, rising to national prominence at just 17 with his breakout role in the television series Bombi Bitt och jag. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he became a leading figure in Swedish theater and cinema, earning a reputation for versatility and emotional depth. His portrayal of Soviet statesman Boris Shcherbina in HBO’s Chernobyl earned him a Golden Globe Award and widespread critical acclaim, reaffirming his mastery of complex, morally layered characters.
