Paddle Out
A Story of Surfing, Love, and the Power of the Human Spirit Debuts on February 13th
Santa Barbara CA – Paddle Out, an inspiring feature documentary about courage, love, and the deep connection between a surfer and the ocean, will have its world premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 13th at noon at the Santa Barbara Film Center, with a second screening on February 14th at 3:20 PM.
The film follows Melissa Pappageorgas, a 33-year-old surfer with cystic fibrosis, who refuses to let anything—not even an oxygen tank—keep her from the waves. What begins as a simple film project becomes an extraordinary friendship and a lesson in resilience, joy, and embracing life fully.
Despite her limited lung capacity, Melissa finds freedom in surfing. She paddles out into the waves, defying expectations and inspiring those around her. Her determination to ride the ocean’s energy, even as her condition progresses, leads to an incredible journey with the support of O’Neill Wetsuits, who help make it possible for her to continue doing what she loves.
Her story is brought to life through breathtaking cinematography and a moving soundtrack featuring songs generously contributed by Jack Johnson, whose music perfectly encapsulates Melissa’s deep connection to the ocean and the beauty of living in the moment.
At a time when the world feels uncertain, Paddle Out reminds us of the magic that remains—the power of perseverance, the importance of chasing dreams, and the miracles found in everyday life.
A FILMMAKER’S PROMISE FULFILLED
For director Sebi Lee, Paddle Out is the fulfillment of a promise to a friend.
“I met Melissa in 2017 when she asked for footage of herself surfing for a hospital commercial. Our friendship grew quickly, and I spent nearly a year capturing her unstoppable spirit.
As her health declined, she faced the need for a second transplant. In December 2018, I made a promise to Melissa that I will finish the project on her death bed. The footage of her final 12 hours left me in profound grief, and for two years, I couldn’t watch.
Eventually, I found the strength to finish the film, piecing together her video diaries, notes, and journals. This journey brought me solace and purpose. I hope Paddle Out inspires others to live fully, embrace challenges, and find joy in every moment—just as Melissa does.”
“We’re honored to bring Paddle Out to SBIFF,” said director Sebi Lee. “Melissa’s story is about courage, love, and choosing to truly live. This film is not just about her—it’s about all of us.”
PROCEEDS TO CHARITY
Paddle Out is more than just a film—it’s a movement. Proceeds from the film will be donated to organizations supporting Cystic Fibrosis awareness, organ donation advocacy, and surf therapy programs, continuing Melissa’s mission of bringing hope and healing to others.
