Gia (1998)

Like

Gia is a biographical drama that tells the tragic true story of Gia Carangi (Angelina Jolie), one of the world’s first supermodels, whose meteoric rise to fame in the late 1970s was overshadowed by her struggles with addiction and self-destruction.

The film chronicles Gia’s journey from a rebellious young woman in Philadelphia to the high-stakes world of fashion in New York City, where her raw beauty and bold personality make her an instant star. Discovered by the powerful agent Wilhelmina Cooper (Faye Dunaway), Gia quickly ascends to the top of the modeling industry, gracing the covers of major magazines and working with elite photographers. However, behind the glamour, she battles loneliness, a troubled past, and an increasing dependency on heroin.

Her relationship with Linda (Elizabeth Mitchell), a makeup artist, offers glimpses of love and stability, but Gia's personal demons and addiction spiral out of control. As her career declines and her health deteriorates, she finds herself alienated from the industry that once adored her. The film ultimately follows her tragic fall, culminating in her untimely death from AIDS-related complications in 1986 at the age of 26.

Poignant and emotionally raw, Gia explores the dark side of fame, the cost of self-destruction, and the fleeting nature of beauty in the modeling world. Angelina Jolie delivers a powerhouse performance, capturing both Gia’s magnetic allure and her profound vulnerability.
